...on plane tickets
Starting from July 1 st 2006 a “solidarity tax” will be placed on flights departing from France.
According to the French President Jacques Chirac the money raised is targeted in particular at health programs for developing nations.
Proposed by Jacques Chirac as an international tax on plane tickets, France is currently the only country to have adopted this tax.
The “solidarity tax” is to apply to air travellers departing from a French airport. The amount of the tax will depend on the final destination and the chosen ticket class.
- Flights within the European Union: 1 € for an economy-class flight; 10 € for business- and 1 st class flights;
- Transcontinental flights: 4 € for an economy-class flight; 40 € for business- and 1 st class flights.
Only the final destination is relevant for this tax. Therefore transit passengers are exempt.
The airline companies will be responsible for collecting the contribution which will be added to the fees and charges already part of the plane ticket’s final price.
