French banks won’t be able to decide freely anymore on the costs consumers have to bare for payment incidents. The bank charges in these situations could indeed very important.
Since a new law which came into force on the 16th of May 2008 clear rules apply to banks for the charges for payment incidents.
For example, for an incident concerning a check of less than 50 Euro, the charges can’t exceed 30 Euro, 50 Euro when the sum to be paid by check exceeds 50 Euro, and 20 Euro when your bank transfer or bank card payment is rejected.
